Abstract

The family Phytoseiidae (Parasitiformes: Mesostigmata) includes important predatory mites widely used in biological control programs. Although Slovenia is located in Central Europe at the intersection of the Alpine, Mediterranean, and Balkan biogeographical regions and therefore hosts diverse habitats, the phytoseiid fauna of the country remains incompletely studied. To date, 37 species belonging to 14 genera have been recorded, representing a relatively low number compared to neighboring Mediterranean and other European countries. Therefore, additional surveys are required to better document the phytoseiid diversity in Slovenia. For this aim, field surveys were conducted within the framework of a bilateral research project between Slovenia and Türkiye. Field surveys were conducted in 2025 in various habitats, with emphasis on wetland and forest ecosystems. Leaves from different host plants were examined using a 10X hand lens, and phytoseiid mites were collected and transported to the laboratory. Specimens were observed under a stereomicroscope, cleared in 60% lactic acid, and mounted in Hoyer’s medium. Morphological examinations were performed using a Zeiss Axio Imager.M2 compound microscope equipped with differential interference contrast optics. The survey resulted in the discovery of a new species, Typhlodromus (Anthoseius) slovenicus sp. nov., described based on adult females. Additionally, three species are recorded for the first time from the Slovenia: Typhlodromus (Typhlodromus) baccettii, Kampimodromus langei, and Graminaseius neograminis. We also documented several additional species previously known from Slovenia, including Amblyseius andersoni, Euseius amissibilis, E. finlandicus, Neoseiulella aceri, N. tiliarum, Phytoseius horridus, K. aberrans, and Paraseiulus talbii. These results increase the number of known phytoseiid species in Slovenia to 41 and indicate the importance of wetland and forest habitats as reservoirs for predatory mites *This study was supported by the Slovenian Research and Innovation Agency (ARIS, Project Number: BI- TR/25-27-004) and the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (Tubitak, Project Number: 224N390); 1 Cukurova University, Agricultural Faculty, Department of Plant Protection, Acarology Lab, Adana, Türkiye; 2 Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, Agricultural Faculty, Department of Plant Protection, Acarology Lab, Çanakkale, Türkiye; 3 University of Ljubljana, Department of Agronomy, Jamnikarjeva ulica 101, SI-1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia.
