Abstract
In two dried maar crater lakes, we studied the mite community in sodic-saline soils from the state of Guanajuato, Mexico, in order to determine their biodiversity, composition, and differences between the two sites. These maar crater lakes have been desiccated since the 1980s. The two maar crater lakes studied were Rincón de Parangueo (20°25’N–101°15’W; 1700 m a.s.l.) and La Alberca (20°23’N–101°12’W; 1690 m a.s.l.), both located in the municipality of Valle de Santiago, Guanajuato, Mexico. During May 2025, soil samples were collected from the saline-alkaline soils of each maar crater lake. In each lake, three sites were selected along a 150 m transect, and five topsoil samples (0–30 cm depth) were taken at each site, for a total of fifteen soil samples per maar crater lake. Samples were transported to the Laboratory of Ecology of Arthropods in Extreme Environments (UMDI-J, Facultad de Ciencias, UNAM) and processed using Berlese funnels. The mites collected were sorted, quantified, and identified. Abundance, species richness, and effective number of species were estimated along the gradient at each site. A total of 459 mites were found in Rincón de Parangueo, while 550 mites were recorded in La Alberca. In Rincón de Parangueo, where soils are highly sodic (pH ˜ 10.9), the dominant family was Nanorchestidae, representing more than 50% of the total mites collected. In contrast, in La Alberca, where soils are more neutral (pH ˜ 7.8), the dominant mite family was Eupodidae. Families such as Carabodidae, Galumnidae, and Guanolichidae were found only in La Alberca Acknowledgment: This study was supported by the project “Estudio de la influencia biológico-ambiental en las propiedades físicas de sedimentos lacustres en valles volcánicos del centro de México e implicaciones en la valoración de usos de suelo y agua”, funded by PAPIIT IG1001325, UNAM, Mexico.
