Abstract

Ten species of Veigaia were reported from central:Maryland. Four of these, V. locha, V. nodosa, V. dendritica and V. alba, were described as new. A lectotype of V. partitus (Banks) n. comb. was designated and described. The male of V. baloeri Farrier was described for the first time. The feeding behavior and the geographie, vertical and seasonal distribution of Veigaia were observed. Two species, V. nodosa and V. alba, were shawn to have a single generation per year. Pauropods, proturans and collembolans of the family Isotomidae were captured and eaten by V. partitus and V. locha. Small collembolans of the genus Onychiurus were eaten, but larger individuals of this genus were usually rejected. On severa! occasions Onychiunts exuded drops of white fluid from the abdomen.
