Abstract
A review of the occurrence of powdery mildew (Erysiphe polygoni), rhizomania (beet necrotic yellow vein furovirus), aphids (Myzus persicae), virus yellows, thrips (Thrips angusticeps), caterpillars (Autographa gamma) and spider mites (Tetranychus urticae) on sugar beet crops in the UK in 1996 is provided. The survey showed that 39% of the crop was infected with E. polygoni by the end of Aug. Rhizomania was observed in 46 fields on 25 previously uninfected farms. A further 23 fields were infected on farms where outbreaks already existed. Aphids did not colonise crops until early Jun. and did not increase substantially until late Jul. They did not colonise crops to any great extent and virus yellows incidence at the end of Aug. remained low. The effect of thrips was severe in many fields and >500 ha had to be redrilled as a result. In 1996 there was an unprecedented migration of caterpillars in Jun. which caused substantial damage in many fields. Infestations of spider mites were seen in early Aug. Damage was mainly confined to headlands
