Abstract
A section on entomology (pp. 5-6) of this report on tobacco in Zimbabwe includes the results of investigations on the incidence, injuriosness, (mainly chemical) chemical control of arthropod pests, especially noctuids, Myzus persicae (Sulz.), Lasioderma serricorne (F.) and Tetranychus evansi Baker & Pritchard. T. evansi, which was found infesting tobacco in a growth room at Kutsaga in 1979 is reported for the first time on tobacco and for the first time from Zimbabwe. It is likely to have been introduced from Mauritius, where it is a pest of tomato. In tobacco, there appeared to be a range of susceptibility among the prescribed cultivars. Kutsaga W1 and 51E were most resistant, and the SCR lines most susceptible. In the field, sprays of cypermethrin were ineffective, but 2 high-volume spray applications of monocrotophos at 320 g/ha, a week apart, appeared to be much more effective.
