Abstract
In the summer of 1963 the progress of four generations of Bryobia rubrioculus Scheuten, of which the third generation caused a considerable population increase, were observed in the Northern Bekaa of the Lebanon. Due to the temperature conditions and a coccinellid predator of the fourth only a part developed to imagines. The site of egg-deposition during the vegetative period is discussed. In midsummer a second injurious mite Tetranychus urticae Koch, which had migrated from weeds in the experimental fruit orchard, appeared on the apple trees. After the completion of two control trials the following can be said: a treatment in spring, when the buds are about to open, with Poly-kil, Tedion, Sulphur or possibly Whiteoil is recommended. In this way the Bryobia population is kept small until summer and the damage on leaves avoided. A thorough weed control is a further measure. Where this is not done an attack of apple trees by T. urticae or T. cinnabarinus cannot be ruled out. For safety sake a supplementary spraying is advisable. Several in Lebanon available plantprotection compounds were tested for their efficiency in this respect.
