Treatise of agricultural zoology. Pests of cultivated plants. Vol. I. Bucharest, Romania, Editura Academiei Republicii Socialiste Romania, 441 p (205-329).

Abstract
This treatise on agricultural zoology is the result of recent research, with new findings, on pests of cultivated plants, especially with regard to ecology, control, reduction of environmental pollution, pest management in Romania and other countries. For each species, its scientific and common names and information on its distribution in the world and in Romania, morphology and biology in relation to control, are given, together with notes on the signs of infestation, a list of food-plants and recommendations on control measures in the case of the more severe or well known pests. This first volume is concerned with nematodes, annelids, molluscs and the arthropod classes Crustacea, Myriapoda and Arachnida (order Acari), particular attention is paid to mites. More detail on the biology and ecology of mites is given, warning and forecasting methods and the use of chemical pesticides are analysed by means of sequential sampling, the concept of critical damage density is discussed as a basis for integrated control, the role of insect, mite and spider predators and fungus, bacterial and virus diseases affecting mites in natural and artificial biological control is discussed, with particular reference to the technology of biological control of Tetranychus urticae Koch by Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot, and methods of physical control against mites infesting glasshouse crops and stored products, by means of ultrasound and ionising, high-frequency and ultraviolet radiation, are presented
