Abstract
Collections of mites associated to papayo var. Maradol were carried out in 20 orchards in Yucatan State, Mexico. To separate the mites, the samples were processed by sieving and washing. The phytophagous mitesTetranychus merganser, Eutetranychus banksi (both Tetranychidae) Calacarus citrifolii (Eriophyidae) and Daidalotarsonemus sp. (Tarsonemidae), as well as the predatory mites Amblyseius sp., Chelaseius sp. and Galendromus helveolus (all Phytoseiidae) were identified. Tetranychus merganser is defined as the most injurious mite pest of papaya in Yucatan because it reached the highest populations, and E. banksi and C. citrifolii are minor pests. There were no evidences of any disease resembling the citrus concentric blotch in papaya. All phytoseiid mites were found in low numbers, so it is assumed that they are not playing an important role as natural enemies of phytophagous mites in papaya.
